Solar Analysis for NW Landscapes and Structures

You may ask, what exactly is a solar analysis and how can it benefit my site design?  A solar analysis is a system that accurately maps data for sun and shade patterns to identify optimal placement for landscape amenities, such as:
  • Greenhouses, sunrooms, and accessory dwellings
  • Gardens, entertainment patios, and decks
  • Children play areas and recreational sites
  • Outdoor dining and public outdoor gathering places

Especially here in the Northwest, many properties have established trees that cast shade where we prefer to have full sun.  Once you locate the trees that generate shade, you will need to identify the tree species and determine how much taller it will grow.  Next is to decide if trimming individual branches, removing the tree (if allowed), or relocating the outdoor space or structure is a reasonable option.

If you aren't sure where to start, no worries, we can help!  We begin by:
  • Identifying sun and shade patterns charted by month and time of day.
  • Map sun and shade locations affecting heat, cooling, and light into structures.
  • Determine sun and shade areas that affect plant selections and locations.
  • Provide proposed tree locations based on mature canopy considerations.
  • Select appropriate vegetation to minimize energy use for structures.
  • Provide optimum locations for on-site food production.
  • Determine solar energy options for on-site use.
Over the years, we have found that solar analysis is an essential tool in the success of our landscape designs.  We provide solar analysis as part of our design process or as a stand-alone service.  We determine and map out the areas that will have direct sun or shade during the time of day for each month of the year.  We also identify which trees or existing structures will inhibit or block the sun.  Solar analysis allows clients to make crucial decisions on whether they want to re-think the design location or to remove trees or structures that are blocking the sun.
