Step 1. Determine the use. Will you be dining, cooking outdoors, having large parties, or is your patio a quiet place for two? Pre-shop online to know what size amenities you want (such as a barbecue, outdoor seating, planters, shade structure, fireplace, spa, etc.) and incorporate them into your plan.
Step 2. Decide on how many people you plan on entertaining on a regular basis. Plan for at least 4 square feet of space for each person. If you are including an outdoor dining or seating area, the rule-of-thumb is to leave a 3-foot minimum clear perimeter around furniture and outdoor amenities.
Step 3. Add more space. It’s a good idea to add in a little extra space. You may decide later to get a bigger table or add in a few more features.
