Why Do Some Landscapes Feel Different?

12/28/2025

Sensory garden design, NW residential landscape, wooded setting landscape
Designed by: BauerCombs & Associates, Inc.
Have you ever stepped into a garden and immediately felt a wave of calm and relaxation?  You couldn’t quite explain it, but something about the space just felt right.

That feeling isn’t luck.
It’s sensory design at work.

As a landscape architect, I’ve learned that the gardens people fall in love with are the ones that engage their senses.

A Story from the Field

A few years ago, I redesigned a landscape for a couple who never used their backyard, though they couldn't quite explain why.

Their outdoor space already had all the elements they loved, a patio, mature trees, and clean lines.  Yet every time they stepped outside, they felt nothing.

During our first walk-through, something stood out. The yard was visually fine, but silent and static. There was no movement, no scent, and no invitation to linger.

So, I changed the design approach.  Here's what we did:
  • Softened the stone path and let it meander just a bit.
  • Added plants that caught the breeze.
  • Created a water feature you could hear but not see from inside.
  • Placed a bench where the afternoon sun hits.
  • Planted fragrant shrubs that release scent when brushed past.

After the landscape matured,  the client emailed me: “We’re outside almost every day now and we can’t explain why it feels so good.”

That’s sensory design!

The Design Lesson

Here’s the design lesson I wish more people understood:

If a landscape only looks good, it will be admired.
If it feels good, it will be used.

The art of sensory design is about intention and subtleties. You don’t need more features; you need the right ones, placed thoughtfully.

Here is a simple sensory checklist I use in every project:
  • Sight: Is there contrast, depth, and gentle movement?
  • Sound: What do you hear when you pause and close your eyes?
  • Touch: Are there textures that invite interaction?
  • Smell: Is there a subtle scent where people naturally pass or sit?
  • Taste (optional but magical): Is there something edible, even small?

When at least three of these are working together, the space begins to feel alive.

Why Some Landscapes Just Feel Different

Because they:
  • Slow your breathing without asking
  • Encourage you to stay five minutes longer
  • Feel personal instead of polished
  • Meet you emotionally, not just aesthetically

These are the outdoor spaces people remember.
Not because they were impressive, but because they felt comfortable.

Your Turn: A Gentle Call to Action

Next time you’re in your own yard, or in a space you’re designing, try this:
  1. Step outside and stand still for one full minute.
  2. Close your eyes.
  3. Ask yourself:
    • What do I hear?
    • What do I smell?
    • What do I want to touch?
    • What am I drawn to?
If the answers are “not much” or “I’m not sure,” no worries, it is not a wrong answer.
It’s an opportunity.

Start with one sense at a time.
One change.
One thoughtful layer.

Because when landscapes are designed to be felt, not just seen, they start becoming places you actually want to be and enjoy.
